Green Room (2016) Worth Watching?

Green Room Review

by Yo Adrian on July 30th, 2018 | |

Green Room was directed by Jeremy Saulnier and stars Anton Yelchin (from Fright Night), Imogen Poots (from Chatroom) and Alia Shawkat from (The Final Girls). It’s about a punk rock band, desperate for a gig, that gets stuck in a Neo-Nazi bar after seeing some shit they weren’t supposed to see.

One way in. No way out.

Green Room Review

I made the mistake of going into this one with high expectations for it being something it wasn’t. While clicking around looking for a movie to watch I stumbled on a lot of high praise for Green Room, with most people talking about how hardcore violent and gory it was. There were a lot of powerful words littered around like ‘extreme’, ‘shocking’ and ‘sickening’. Some people talked about how it took days for them to get over it.

Sounds like my kind of movie!

So I’m watching and waiting for the “Maximum Shock and Awe” that the movie poster promises. But nothing really happens. There’s some action for sure, but I sat through most of Green Room waiting for a level of action that never really materialized. It’s a great movie, don’t get me wrong, I just made the mistake of letting the Internet pump me up too much.

Green Room is basically a violent standoff between a group of desperate young punk rockers and a refined older gentleman (Patrick Stewart) who surrounds himself with Nazi thugs. A lot of mistakes are made, on both ends, there’s a lot of running, yelling and ill-fated plans of escape. The movie promises suspense and gore and it delivers more of the former than the latter. I mean, there’s blood and all, but it’s no Saw 3 or Hostel.

Worth Watching?

Hell yes! It’s an original horror with a great cast and a gripping story. It’s intense, violent and nerve-wracking. And there’s one incredible scene in particular where the band hits their musical sweet spot and the crowd goes bat shit crazy, but it’s filmed in a way that’s just memorizing. Green Room is a movie every fan of survival horror should see.
