Behind the Mask Review

Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon was directed by Scott Glosserman and stars Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, Robert Englund (the horror icon from Nightmare on Elm Street, 2001 Maniacs, Strangeland, SanitariumNightworld and dozens more) and Zelda Rubinstein (from Poltergeist and Anguish). It’s about an aspiring serial killer who hires a documentary team to follow him around as he prepares for his next big kill.

Jason, Freddy, Myers. We All Need Someone To Look Up To.

Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon Review

I had seen this title floating around for years before finally sitting down to watch it. I had no real reason to avoid it, others seemed to like it. Maybe it was the atypical name for a horror. Maybe it was the comedy angle. Maybe it was the mask. Couldn’t say. But for whatever reason it popped up on my radar once again and I decided to give it a stab.

Turns out it’s a brilliant flick that’s jam packed with horror cameos and more horror references than I could keep up with! There’s not a whole lot of slashing going on, for a slasher movie, rather it’s more of a behind the scenes look at the life of an aspiring slasher.

Behind the Mask takes place in a world where Freddy, Jason and Meyers are all real. And Vernon is an ambitious rising star just looking to join their ranks in the slasher Hall of Fame. He works hard at his craft and even has serial killing mentors that help him professionally.

This was an entertaining watch from start to finish. It starts off in true slasher style, moves onto the mockumentary side of things where Vernon charismatically explains all the nuts ‘n bolts behind slashing and wraps up with some really fun twists that I didn’t see coming.

Can’t believe I waited so long to watch this!

Worth Watching?

If you’re a fan of classic 80’s slashers than you’ll definitely get a kick out of Leslie Vernon. And you’ll recognize a ton of horror references that are sure to make you smile.
