Unburied Trailers: Funny Man (1994)

Welcome to our continued series: “Unburied” ! Each week, we’re going to select one forgotten oddball horror movie trailer from way back and dig it up so you can play with the bones. And just look what crawled out of the crypt this week!

Funny Man is a 1994 UK horror-comedy film that seems to be an attempt to make an imitation of Freddy Kruger for the tea-and-crumpets people over across the pond. Max Taylor is a gambler who wins the keys to an entire English mansion put up in a poker game by none other than Christopher Lee himself. When Max gets there, he finds out why Lee was so eager to dump the place: It’s cursed by a demonic court jester. Activating an artifact of evil awakens the demon jester, who proceeds to slaughter everybody in arm’s reach with a host of harlequin-themed deadly pranks.

Sounds like fun? Reviews, like the one you see on the movie’s home page, are mixed. But the trailer is a wild ride, showing a sufficiently grotesque jester terrorizing the family. When he’s done with them, a cast of Scooby-Doo cosplayers randomly shows up at the mansion and they get bumped off too. No, we don’t know why. Oh, yeah, and the jester is all about the show, putting on elaborate mums ranging from a Mexican bandito stand-off to Punch-and-Judy puppetry to… breasts. Huge, massive, lumpy, volcano, bazoonga breasts, with their own ZIP code, on the jester himself, guaranteed to slaughter your sex drive for the rest of the week.

Well, they were aiming over the top, so did they hit it? It seems a bit manic and shrill, but wacky enough to find some fans for its sheer madness.
