Unburied Trailers: Dr. Frankenstein on Campus (1970)

Welcome to our continued series: “Unburied” ! Each week, we’re going to select one forgotten oddball horror movie trailer from way back and dig it up so you can play with the bones. And just look what crawled out of the crypt this week!

Your humble author was at first skeptical of finding an on-theme “Unburied” trailer for Frankenstein Week. A bit of research proved that I’d have a problem narrowing it down to just one. This one barely beats out Frankenstein Meets the Spacemonster (1965), which is also well worth an eyeball.

The Summer of Love had an interesting effect on corporations and media. The Suits started out ignoring the Flower Power kids, then they mocked them. By the early 1970s, businesses realized with growing horror that the hippie movement wasn’t going away and worse yet were settling down to jobs and houses in the suburbs, which means they were actually going to have to MARKET to these people! And so they set to work, trying to win back points they’d so callously lost with the counterculture movement, adopting a cringe-inducing lexicon of “groovy” and “hang loose” and whatever else they thought those crazy kids were saying.

So we have Dr. Frankenstein on Campus, which is part upstart Viktor bucking the college system, part sexploitation, and lots of go-go dancing and pandering to the hippies. By all reports we can dredge from the swamps, it’s a transparent attempt that tries to be the groovy horror movie for the Monkees generation, but still reeks of Skidoo-like insincerity. The trailer, though, is a historic freak enough, with lines like “heady music, and raw horror, and naked ladies, and Frankenstein monsters don’t make a great movie – but they sure don’t hurt!” No, see, Mr. Marketing Executive, you’re not supposed to say that part out loud!
