An American remake of a Japanese original, but from the same director, The Grudge follows several plot lines and is told in nonlinear order. When a person dies in a state of extreme rage or sorrow a curse is born. The curse manifests physically and kills anyone it can reach, pushing the curse further as it expands indefinitely. A woman and her son are drowned in their bathroom by her husband, thus beginning the curse in a home in Tokyo. When an American couple move in it’s not long before they succumb to the curse and a caregiver, Karen, comes to care for the couple’s elderly mother. She is touched by the curse and desperately tries to work with the police to end the madness.
