In the French language Martyrs (later remade in America) a young Lucie escapes from her tortured imprisonment in a slaughterhouse and is placed in an orphanage. Once grown up she, along with a friend, Anna, she grew close to, go looking for revenge on those who imprisoned her as a child. When Lucie is unable to handle her memories of abuse mentally she kills herself, leaving Anna alone in the same building she once escaped. Anna becomes a new victim to the philosophical torturers who believe that there are those who fall to madness like Lucie and those who transcend pain to become martyrs. Featuring brutal gore and torture the film is considered part of the New French Extremity movement.
