Blumhouse is Officially Remaking The Craft; Zoe Lister-Jones to Write & Direct

by Jessica Gomez on March 28th, 2019 | |

Few films receive the well-deserved cult status that the 1996 teen witch film The Craft has been awarded. Though the film is over 20 years old, it has aged well. Ahead of its time tackling issues such as date rape, racism, poverty, and suicide, with four female leads seeking revenge on those who do them wrong, all while serving up iconic fashion and proving it’s cool for a girl to be weird and to be strong. Indeed, this one will be hard to live up to – but Blumhouse is going to try.

The coven will be led by a female this time. Zoe Lister-Jones has been snapped up to put her spin on the reboot, as she is set to write the screenplay and to direct. Most of Lister-Jones’s film credits are in the comedy realm, so we won’t be surprised if the reboot has a slightly more comedic tone than the original.

The Craft is a beloved and influential film, so tackling a reboot is a large undertaking; it will be up against some tough critics with die-hard fans and purists ready to pick it apart. We’re holding off judgment, but we’re hoping for some important updated social commentary and overt feminism that will prove as important and lasting as the original.
